Blank initial decision inputs?

?path=sgary&height=32 Shayne Gary 12 posts Apologies for what is probably a simple question, but I'm new to Simulate and haven't been able to find a solution to this in the help documents. I would like to have the text decision input boxes blank at time=0; but then retain the current input values (as they do currently) from time=1 onward. I don't want participants using the simulation to anchor on the model's initial values (at time=0), when they begin making their decisions - but we do want them to be able to see their own choices, after each decision (i.e. from time=1). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am sorry that I do not have any other better solutions.

Billy

?path=billy&height=32 Billy Schoen... Administrator 255 posts Hi Shayne,

I think this is a feature that we may be able to implement.  I am currently discussing it with the team in order to find an appropriate time for us to schedule it in.  I will respond to you by Wednesday May 30th with what our plan for proceeding is.

Thanks!

Billy

?path=billy&height=32 Billy Schoen... Administrator 255 posts HI Shayne,

After discussing with the team this is definitely something that we can do.  We can do this by the week of June 25.  I will keep you up to date with our progress.

Thanks!

Billy

?path=sgary&height=32 Shayne Gary 12 posts Thanks Billy, that's great. This is a research project we're planning to run with participants in late June, so I really appreciate if the week of June 25 timing is possible.

Cheers,
Shayne

Just wanted to let you know that the feature went our for release on Friday and is all ready for your use from here on out.

To use it check off the checkbox in the Decision Input settings called "Initialize with blank value"

Best,

Billy

?path=sgary&height=32 Shayne Gary 12 posts Hi Billy,

A quick question re this new functionality please - I have conditional formatting on these decision inputs (e.g. a value between 0 and 100 must be entered, before participants can run the simulation). With the "Initialize with blank value" box ticked though, Forio is still recognizing the values stored in Vensim for this decision input (e.g. 50). As such, participants can click "run" when the decision inputs are blank and the simulation will run successfully (i.e. the conditional formatting error message fails to appear).

I can change the initial values in Vensim, so they are out of the conditional formatting range. But before I change the model, I'd appreciate if you would let me know if there's a simple way to stop this from happening in Forio - that is, if participants don't enter a value in the blank decision input box at t=0, is there a type of conditional formatting that will stop the simulation running?

Thanks in advance,
Shayne

?path=billy&height=32 Billy Schoen... Administrator 255 posts Hi Shayne,

No I am sorry - the only thing I would suggest would be to set the initial value outside of the range.  Conditionals only operate on the values of variables - and blanking out a decision input does not blank out the value of the variable that it is displaying.

Billy
