upload data didn't work
|

hi, everyone,
The action "upload data" for a button didn't work in my interface. I try both, default format and customer data template. Could anyone send me a tutorial or a introduction about how to use the action or make it work in each way(default & customer template)? P.S. I saw some post talking that only premium or above user could use this action. I am a premium user. Thank you very much. Muyuan |

Hi Serge,
Thanks for the note. I wanted to post a short update that we are looking in to this. Yes -- you as a premium user should be able to do this. I'm assembling a sample simulation you can look at it and will post a link to it later today. WILL |

Thank you, Will. I am looking forward to it.

Hi Serge,
Here's a quick update. We've built out a sample sim, but candidly there seems to be some problems with the feature. We're doing some more work to figure out what's wrong and will get back to you later this week. WILL |

Hi Muyuan,
I have fixed the errors that Will is referring to and I have placed a copy of a sim which uses all forms of data uploading into your account. When you use a sim with data upload there are 2 key things you need to do #1 - You need to make sure that everyone who uses the feature is logged in. In the sample sim I have placed into your account I have done that using the Login Components on the Login Page. Your other option would be to use the Authenticate User action before the Upload Data action #2 - You need to place a button or a hit area on the page with an upload data action. When you place that action on the button you will be given an option to use the default 2 column form for the template with Variable Name (as it appears in the model) on the left and value on the right) or a custom template form which is described in the sim + materials. If you need anything else please let me know, Billy |

Hi, Bill,
Thank you. I am able to use upload data action now. However I have some questions. I try custom template. When I set the action, it requires upload a template. What is the format for the template? Is it still 2 column form? How to set the template? Also, although I upload the template. When I run the simulation and click the button, it still require me to upload a file. Is it supposed to work like this? I thought if I upload a template ahead, it would automatically open the template and let me type in data when I click the button. Thank you so much. Muyuan |

Hi,
The point of the template is that the author of the sim specifies a custom format, then each user is able to upload data in that format. If you look at the example we created (in your account) http://forio.com/simulate/serge/sample-data-upload/ you'll see a file template.xlsx. This specifies where the users should put their inputs by includinng the text D_decisionname, where "decisionname" is the name of the decision in your model. The user then uploads a spreadsheet with a number *in that same cell* and it is loaded into decision "decisionname". I've given you a sample teamplate "template.xlsx" and a file for the user based on this template "upload-requires-template.xlsx". |

Good morning, Will,
I am Muyuan. Thank you for the sample. I try to copy your model, but I failed. What's the format for the "initial population" and "population growth rate" variables in vensim? Also, I have another problem. The "reset simulation" didnt work in my model. I thought after I run a simulation, if I click the reset simulation button, I can change some variable in my model and run again. However, in my model, after I run a simulation, although I click on reset simulation button, nothing seems happen. The run simulation button is still in grey( can't work). The model is named "Ortho" under "diakanda.serge" account. I know it's confusing. I build the model under that account. Could you please have a look of that model. Also, could you please have a look why the upload data by custom template didn't work? Thank you so much. Best wishes, Muyuan |

Hi Muyuan,
The sim is in your account http://forio.com/simulate/serge/sample-data-upload/overview/ are you able to access it? You can view the model by clicking the model tab. It's a Forio model, but the same principal will work for Vensim model. (Just make the variables either GAME variables or constants). The sample files can be accessed from the file manager http://forio.com/simulate/serge/sample-data-upload/files/sample-files/ Regarding the problem with reset, the run button grayed out for me, but when I clicked "Reset" on the bottom of the dashboard button, I was then able to run again. Perhaps you fixed this? If it's another page, make sure the RESET_VARS action is included. Regarding the difficulty uploading data -- remember that for initial values, they must be uploaded when the run is at the start of the simulation. If you'd like I could set up a conference call and go over this with you directly via phone during US west coast business hours. Email me at wglass@forio.com to set this up. |

Hi, Will
Thank you for sharing the sample with me. I ran it successfully on last Thursday, but it didn't work today. I ran to the end with the default value at first, then click reset button and then upload the upload-requires-template.xls file. It did show the value changed on last Thursday, but the value remain the same today. I don't know why it works like this. Also, I built a test vensim model, which is a copy of your sample, under "Muyuan Li" account. I tried to set both variables either constant or GAME, but nothing worked. I failed to do the uploading data function. Could you please have a look at my model? I am available on Monday morning before 12pm. When is convenient for you? Thank you. Best wishes, Muyuan |

Please email me directly, wglass@forio.com to set up a time. |

Good morning, Will,
After our call, I tried to modify the model under the premium account. The reset action works properly. However, the upload data action didn't work. The URL is http://forio.com/simulate/diakanda.serge/model-2. The button with upload data action is on the upload data page and the button's name is "set initial value". I am sure all the variables' format are game variable. I do the preview right after I log in my account, but the upload data action didn't work. Nothing happen when I click the button. The user data file's name is "POD template - user data". Also, I tried to verify whether my sample model work and I found it didn't work after our call. Nothing happened. The URL is http://forio.com/simulate/muyuanli.2010/upload-data-test. The user data file's name is "template-test". It's so weird. Could you please have a look of those two models? Thank you so much. Have a great one. P.S. I sent you email after our call, but I didn't hear back. I wonder it may be more appropriate to post it here. Muyuan |

Also, I have another question. How to make sure the button or table would show the text completely? In comparable run table, the confirm selection button can't show the text "confirm selection" completely. Also, in other run tables, the table can't show the variable name completely. Do you know how to fix this?
Thank you. Muyuan |

Hi Muyuan,
If you are seeing "..." in the UI designer that is okay, it will happen sometimes. In order to make sure that you do not see ... in the published version of the interface please go to the Document Settings Panel and check off the box labeled "Embed Fonts" and re-publish your simulation. As for your other questions I will let Will handle them Billy |
|
|
Hi, Bill
Thank you for your response. I tried it, but I found I have to uncheck "allow scalling" if I want to uncheck the "embeded fonts". Can I remain the "allow scalling" checked when I uncheck the "embeded fonts"? Thank you. Muyuan |
|
|
Hi Muyuan,
I think you mis-understood me. I meant to say that you want to have embed fonts selected. Billy |

Hi Muyuan,
To comment on the upload data issue (1) Make sure you are logged in to Simulate - this feature doesn't work if you aren't logged in. Generally, we recommend you use this feature in a Simulate Pro account with the setting "Users must subscribe to this simulation." (2) After uploading data to a Vensim-based sim, you must run the model. When you use a Forio model you'll see the uploaded data immediately show up on the interface. However, for Vensim-based sims the data is not loaded until the model is stepped at least once. I tested your sim (I took the template file, edited to use actual numbers) and was able to see the numbers from my spreadsheet be loaded into your model. |
