CloudStrat
Software Platform Migration Simulation
Simulation Overview
CloudStrat places students in the role of Chief Strategy Officer at LegaSoft, a legacy enterprise software leader navigating disruption as the market shifts from on-premise solutions to cloud-based SaaS. Over five rounds, players make interconnected decisions about pricing, R&D, platform ecosystem development, marketing investments, server capacity, and the build-versus-buy strategy for a new HCM module. Success requires balancing the declining but profitable legacy business with the need to accelerate SaaS adoption and harness network effects, all while competing against a fast-moving rival. Performance is evaluated across revenue growth, market share, cash balance, and cumulative operating income.

The Story

LegaSoft has dominated the enterprise software world for decades, its on-premise ERP solutions powering corporations across the globe. But everything is changing. The market is shifting toward cloud-based SaaS offerings, where subscription pricing, instant deployment, and continuous updates are rapidly becoming the norm. NetWare—your cloud-native rival—has already jumped ahead, stealing early market share and building a fast-growing ecosystem of third-party apps. As LegaSoft’s new Chief Strategy Officer, you must manage one of the most challenging transitions in modern business: migrating from a profitable but aging legacy business to an uncertain but explosive cloud future.
You face a maze of interconnected decisions each year: how quickly to shift R&D from mature legacy modules to underdeveloped SaaS products, how much to invest in server capacity to avoid catastrophic performance issues, how aggressively to price without triggering a race to the bottom, when to stimulate the ecosystem with platform spending, and whether to build or buy an entirely new Human Capital Management (HCM) module.
Network effects amplify every choice—your customer base attracts developers, developers attract more customers, and every delay risks surrendering momentum to NetWare. Meanwhile, legacy revenues still fund much of your growth, and moving too fast could cannibalize your core business before SaaS is ready to sustain it. Managing this transition becomes a strategic balancing act: protect the present while building the future.
Across five intense rounds, market dynamics shift, technologies evolve, and player decisions compound. With no single “right” strategy, only the most thoughtful, data-driven, and well-timed choices will position LegaSoft to emerge as the leader of the cloud era.
