Strategic Decision Making Simulation

Simulation Overview

The Data Analytics Simulation: Strategic Decision Making challenges learners to harness the power of data to make high-impact business decisions. Acting as a senior executive in a competitive market, participants must interpret evolving datasets, weigh tradeoffs, and determine the best course of action to drive success.

Grounded in principles of data-driven strategy, critical thinking, and managerial judgment, the simulation demonstrates how analytics can inform—but not replace—human insight. Learners experience how biases, incomplete information, and overreliance on intuition can shape outcomes, gaining a deeper understanding of how to apply analytical tools effectively in real-world decision-making.

By combining data analysis with strategic insight, this experience underscores the importance of analytical thinking, evidence-based reasoning, and confident leadership in data-driven organizations.

The Story

Your company’s performance is on the line—and the data tells a complicated story. As a leader making high-stakes strategic decisions, you must cut through the noise, interpret key insights, and take action. Do you trust your instincts, follow the analytics, or find the balance between both?

In the Data Analytics simulation, the learners play the role of a product marketing manager for a brand of laundry detergent at a large consumer products firm. The participants explore several years of existing data and formulate a marketing strategy. Next, they execute that strategy by making decisions about product pricing, target markets, inventory levels, and allocations of marketing and media spending over several simulated years.

In this fast-paced simulation, learners experience the tension between intuition and evidence as they make data-informed choices that determine business success. The challenge: not just analyzing data, but transforming it into strategy.
