Net Positive Hospitality

Responsible Management Simulation

Simulation Overview

This simulation places learners in charge of managing a hotel over a multi-year period with the goal of maximizing progress toward Net Positive Hospitality across the four impact areas—People, Planet, Place, and Prosperity.

Learners evaluate annual news, select initiatives, and allocate investment in staff training and guest communication. These choices influence operational, social, environmental, and financial outcomes, allowing learners to experience the interplay among sustainability strategies, organizational performance, and resilience to external shocks.

Rooted in responsible management and sustainability frameworks developed by the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, the simulation reinforces systems thinking, strategic prioritization, stakeholder engagement, and performance measurement as essential capabilities for organizations aiming to put back more than they take from society, the environment, and the economy.

The simulation can be played in a variety of settings that are selected by the learner and the facilitator. The facilitator can also introduce different news items and crises during the game to tailor the learning experience to the needs of participants.

The Story

Your hotel sits at the center of a rapidly shifting hospitality landscape—where guest expectations, regulatory pressures, environmental risks, and community needs converge. As the leader, you must decide which initiatives to pursue, how to invest in staff and guests, and how to balance short-term demands with long-term sustainability goals.

Each year brings new information, unexpected challenges, and evolving opportunities. Will your decisions help the hotel progress along the Pathway to Net Positive Hospitality—or leave it vulnerable to environmental crises, reputational risks, and declining performance?

In this immersive experience, learners discover how thoughtful action, consistent investment, and strategic alignment can drive meaningful impact across the different impact areas of Net Positive (People, Planet, Place and Prosperity). At the end of seven years of decision-making, learners review their hotel’s performance and reflect on different strategies to maximize progress towards Net Positive Hospitality.

Learning Objectives

Making significant progress towards becoming Net Positive is challenging for organizations but possible if continuous action is taken across the impact areas of People, Planet, Place and Prosperity.
Anticipate and respond to environmental and social risks highlighted in annual news and crises.
Prioritize initiatives and investments to maximize progress across the 4Ps.
Understand how operational, environmental, social, and financial variables interact within the hotel ecosystem.
Address the needs and expectations of staff, guests, suppliers, and community partners.
Performance measurement and analysis is critical to achieving results.
There is not a single path that applies to all companies. An organization’s characteristics and location impact the optimum strategies to progress towards Net Positive.
