Simulation Overview

Together with its members and partners, the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance has developed the Pathway to Net Positive Hospitality, a roadmap for companies to put back more into society, the environment and the economy than they take out. In this holistic framework, companies progress along a pathway towards Net Positive Hospitality by taking action along four key impact areas: People, Planet, Place and Prosperity.

Time Requirement

  • Introduction - 15 minutes
  • Game Play - 90 minutes
  • Debrief - 30 to 60 minutes

The Story

In the simulation, participants manage a hotel for a period of seven years and aim to maximize their progress towards the achievement of Net Positive Hospitality. Progress can be achieved through the implementation of various initiatives each year, as well as by spending money on staff training and guest communication.

Each year, learners review news on developments in the hotel’s environment and select four initiatives from a continuously evolving list. After entering decisions, feedback is provided on the learner’s decisions and performance along the different impact areas of Net Positive (People, Planet, Place and Prosperity). At the end of seven years of decision-making, learners review their hotel’s performance and reflect on different strategies to maximize progress towards Net Positive Hospitality.

The simulation can be played in a variety of settings that are selected by the learner and the facilitator. The facilitator can also introduce different news items and crises during the game to tailor the learning experience to the needs of participants.

Learning Focus

  • Making significant progress towards becoming Net Positive is challenging for organizations but possible if continuous action is taken across the impact areas of People, Planet, Place and Prosperity.
  • Progress towards Net Positive does not need to go at the expense of financial performance.
  • Choosing the right strategies on the path to Net Positive requires managers to think through all the consequences of their decisions and to prioritize.
  • Progressing on the path to Net Positive requires the involvement of multiple stakeholders, including employees, customers, and suppliers.
  • Organizations that make progress towards being Net Positive are more resilient and better able to deal with adverse developments in the external environment.
  • Performance measurement and analysis is critical to achieving results.
  • There is not a single path that applies to all companies. An organization’s characteristics and location impact the optimum strategies to progress towards Net Positive.
